Arsenal and Manchester United look set to miss out on the signature of Ilkay Gundogan as the midfielder edges closer to signing a contract extension at Borussia Dortmund, according to reports.

Gundogan’s future at the Westfalonstadion has been in doubt over recent months as he’s got less than 18 months left to run on his current contract and he’s already turned down Dortmund’s last two contract extension offers.

With the German international’s deal set to expire in the summer of 2016, both Arsenal and Manchester United have been strongly tipped to try and lure the midfielder to the Premier League at the end of the season with the duo readying £20m bids.

United boss Louis van Gaal recently admitted that a new central midfielder will be one of his priorities this summer while Arsene Wenger needs to find a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta, and Gundogan would have been an excellent addition for either club.

However, the Express are reporting that the 24-year-old is ready to snub the likes of Arsenal and United and is now close to finally agreeing terms over a new deal with Dortmund.

Gundogan told reporters in Germany that talks are ‘looking good’ and hinted that Marco Reus’s decision to sign a new deal at Dortmund has played a key role in him committing his future to the club.

“I don’t want to say anything about it, things are looking good.”

“Marco’s signature has made us all euphoric” Gundogan is quoted as saying by the Express

The German international only returned to full fitness in October following over a year on the sidelines with a serious back injury and he’s finally starting to find his best form again, which has coincided with Dortmund’s recent revival.

The former Bundesliga champions sat bottom of the table a month ago but are now up to 12th following a 3-2 victory over Stuttgart last Friday and it appears their upturn in form may also have played a role in persuading Gundogan to pen a new deal.

The midfielder is yet to officially sign on the dotted line so there is still time for things to change which could see the door open for Arsenal and United, but it looks increasingly likely that Wenger and van Gaal will have to move on to other targets.
