Man Utd Target ‘Impressed’ Following Talks With Liverpool Over Potential €28m Move

The race for Memphis Depay has taken a new twist as reports claim the attacker was left impressed after holding talks with Liverpool over a potential €28m move.

As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Liverpool hold talks with Memphis Depay…

The race for Memphis Depay appears to have taken a new twist as reports today claim that the PSV attacker has been left impressed after holding secret talks with Liverpool over a potential €28m move.

Depay is set to leave PSV Eindhoven this summer and his sensational form this season has attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs with Manchester Untied, Liverpool and PSG among those thought to be keen.

Dutch publication Voetbal International suggested yesterday that he had flown over to the UK on Wednesday to hold face-to-face talks with United over a possible move to Old Trafford.

The British media also picked up on the news and claimed that Louis van Gaal was present at the meeting and was trying to tempt the 21-year-old with a bumper contract worth around £130,000-a-week.

However, in a dramatic twist, the Mirror are claiming today that Depay in fact flew in to Manchester airport on Thursday and held secret talks with Liverpool officials at a hotel nearby after the Reds were given permission by PSV to talk with the attacker over a €28m (£20m) move.

The newspaper states that the player was joined by his advisers Kees Ploegsma and Kees Vos and they were left ‘hugely impressed’ following lengthy negotiations with Liverpool officials – which including MD Ian Ayre.

If this story is accurate, then it’s certainly an intriguing turn of events although it’s not made clear whether Depay could have held talks with United on Wednesday then went on to speak with Liverpool the following day.

If United and Liverpool are interested, it would make sense for the player to take the opportunity to speak with both clubs while he was in England, but it’s going to be interesting to see which clubs he opts for if he does want to move to the Premier League.

Many reports have suggested that the players close relationship with former Dutch boss van Gaal will play a key role in his decision, but the Mirror suggest that former Liverpool players Dirk Kuyt and Bolo Zenden have been encouraging him to move to Anfield.

Whoever does end up winning the race for his signature will be getting one of the most exciting young attackers in European football and he’d be a great addition to either squad.

Depay has enjoyed a stunning season in Holland that’s seen him score 26 goals in all competitions with his latest strike a superb free-kick that helped secure PSV the Eredivisie title last weekend.

He’s predominantly played as a left-sided forward but he’s capable of also playing through the middle as a striker, so he’d give Rodgers or van Gaal plenty of options in attack.

Things seem to be changing on a daily basis so we’re just going to have to keep a close eye on developments over the coming weeks.
