Arsenal have been handed a boost as Manchester United will only try to sign Morgan Schneiderlin if their ambitious €14m move for No.1 target Bastian Schweinsteiger fails to come off, according to reports.

United boss Louis van Gaal is on the look out for another deep-lying midfielder this summer to act as a long term replacement for Michael Carrick – who struggled with injury problems throughout last season.

Widespread reports in recent days have claimed that United have joined Arsenal in the race for Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin with the Red Devils believed to have made contact with the players representatives to express their interest.

Schneiderlin is set to leave St Mary’s this summer after confirming he wants to join an English club who competes in the Champions League:

“I think my decision is made. The goal is to stay in England. It is a championship that I like and where I have a lot of fun.

“If I leave Southampton, it is for a club that plays better than the Europa League. There are ongoing discussions but nothing is done. But of course the Champions League is my goal.

“If I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League.” Schneiderlin told reporters

It’s understood that Southampton are ready to cash-in as long as their £25m asking price is met and United are willing to match that figure to sign the French international, but only if they fail to land Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The Daily Star claim that van Gaal has made the German international his No.1 midfield target this summer and the Express suggests an ambitious €14m bid is set to go in over the coming weeks.

Schweinsteiger has been at Bayern Munich his entire professional career but doubts over his future have arisen in recent months and it seems United are now ready to offer the 30-year-old a new challenge here in the Premier League.

That news will come as a major boost to Arsenal as it leaves them in pole position to sign Schneiderlin. Arsene Wenger is also in the market for another midfielder as Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Abou Diaby are all set to leave the club this summer and Schneiderlin is believed to be Wenger’s top target.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop with both potential deals but a busy summer of transfer activity could see Schweinsteiger move to Old Trafford which would clear the way for Schneiderlin to head for the Emirates.
