Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has sent his scouts to watch Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna in action against Barcelona in tonight’s Champions League final, according to reports.

Ogbonna made his name at Torino and his impressive form at the Stadio Olimpico led to a big-money move to Juventus back in the summer of 2013 when the Italian champions beat-off stiff competition to secure his signature.

However, things haven’t quite gone according to plan for the 26-year-old in Turin as he’s struggled to establish himself as an important first team player over the past two seasons.

The likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli are all ahead of him in the pecking order and he’s been restricted to making just 16 Serie A starts this season as Juve retained their title.

The lack of action has led to speculation that Ogbonna is looking for a move this summer in search of first team football and reports have suggested that both Liverpool and Tottenham are weighing-up moves for the defender.

It looks like Liverpool are ready to step-up their interest with ESPN claiming today that Rodgers has sent his scouts to watch the Italian international in action against Barcelona in Berlin this evening.

Ogbonna is on stand-by to fill-in as Chiellini is already ruled out of tonight’s Champions League final through injury while Barzagli is also a doubt, so Massimiliano Allegri may have no choice but to call upon the former Torino man.

Liverpool are looking to strengthen all areas of their squad this summer and with the future of Martin Skrtel in doubt due to his contract stand-off, Rodgers is eyeing a new centre-back and Ogbonna could now emerge as a key target if he impresses tonight.

It will certainly be interesting to see how he fares against the likes of Neymar, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. If he can handle himself against those three, he can do it against anyone.

It would be a calculated risk if Liverpool do decide to gamble on Ogbonna this summer as he was developing into a fine centre-back at Torino but has lost his confidence at Juve. If they could get him back to his best it could turn out to be a shrewd signing by Rodgers.
