Arsenal and Liverpool have been given fresh hope in their pursuit of Jackson Martinez after the striker confirmed he’s yet to make a decision over his future, Sky Sports are reporting today.

Martinez is expected to leave FC Porto this summer after another hugely productive campaign in Portugal that saw him score 32 goals in just 42 appearances.

The Colombian international has attracted interest from the Premier League with reports last month claiming that Arsenal were close to securing a deal for the striker while further speculation suggested that Liverpool had also joined the chase for his signature.

It looked like the English duo had missed out as Porto president Pinto da Costa claimed over the weekend that Martinez had chosen AC Milan and was set for a €35m (£25m) move:

“Jackson Martinez has chosen Milan,” Pinto da Costa is quoted as saying by the Mirror

“Before going on holiday, Jackson announced he wanted to leave. The €35m clause is not up for debate and must be paid. I learned just now that Jackson has chosen Milan.

However, it seems Arsenal and Liverpool could yet win the race for Martinez’s signature as the striker has now distanced himself from reports suggesting he’s set for a move to the San Siro and insists he will make a decision over his future soon.

“I’m as close to Milan as I am to other clubs,” he’s quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“I will decide my future in the next few days.”

Martinez is currently away on international duty with Colombia at the Copa America so I’m sure he’ll be concentrating on his football for now and making a decision over his next move when the time is right.

His goal-scoring record at Porto is superb and if he could replicate that kind of form in front of goal in the Premier League he’d be an excellent addition for either Arsenal or Liverpool.

Many feel the Gunners are a top class striker short of being genuine title challengers and Martinez could be the man to fire Arsene Wenger’s side to their first title since 2004.

However, Liverpool are also in desperate need for more firepower after only registering 52 league goals last season so I’m sure Brendan Rodgers would love to have someone with Martinez’s pedigree leading the line at Anfield next season.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days and weeks but I’d love to see Martinez plying his trade in the Premier League so hopefully he turns his back on his proposed move to Italy.
