As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Liverpool are ready to increase their offer for Christian Benteke….

Liverpool’s summer splurge looks set to continue as Brendan Rodgers is preparing  to increase his offer for Chelsea target Christian Benteke to £25m, according to the Express.

The Reds are already closing-in on their sixth signing of the summer after the Guardian reported earlier this week that Southampton had accepted their £12.5m offer for right-back Nathaniel Clyne just days after wrapping-up a deal for Roberto Firmino.

But it looks like Rodgers is ready to open his wallet once again as the Express claim that Liverpool are set to table an improved £25m offer for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke having already seen an opening £22m offer rejected.

The newspaper suggests that the fresh bid will be submitted in the coming days but the Merseysiders may have to dig a little deeper as the offer still falls short of Villa’s asking price, which is the full value of Benteke’s £32.5m buy out clause.

It will be interesting to see if £25m will be enough to persuade Villa to cash-in but Liverpool could yet face stiff competition for Benteke’s signature as the Express claim that Chelsea are continuing to monitor the strikers situation.

Jose Mourinho needs to bring in another front man following the departure of Dider Drogba and Benteke certainly has similar attributes to the powerful Ivory Coast international so he could be the ideal replacement.

With Diego Costa already on the books at Stamford Bridge, Benteke may feel he could get more regular first team football at Liverpool but worryingly for the Merseysiders, the Belgian striker was quoted in the Daily Star as saying earlier this month that he wants to play in the Champions League.

“My agent knows my ambition. I want to play in the Champions League. That’s a dream and my ambition.

“It’s about [my agent]. He knows what I want and I’ll let him do the job. I don’t think about Aston Villa now.

“I did my season with Villa and now I am focused with the national team.” Benteke is quoted as saying by the Daily Star

Obviously Liverpool can’t offer the striker Champions League football this coming season so Chelsea may move themselves into pole position for his signature if Mourinho was to step-up his interest over the coming days.

However, if the Blues decide to pass-up on the opportunity, then I’m sure Benteke would still consider a move to Anfield as it will be a huge step-up from Villa and he’d still be playing in the Europa League next season.

Whether Benteke is the striker Liverpool really need is open to debate but with 49 goals in 99 games for a struggling Villa side since joining from Genk in 2012, he’d certainly bring a much needed threat in front of goal.
