Christian Benteke Aston-Villa

Liverpool are set to wrap-up their seventh signing of the summer with Christian Benteke expected to arrive at Melwood today to complete his £32.5m move from Aston Villa, according to Sky Sports News.

Benteke has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool all summer and after seeing an opening £22m offer rejected, the Liverpool Echo reported last week that the Merseysider’s had finally agreed to meet the strikers £32.5m release clause.

Liverpool and Aston Villa were then locked in negotiations over how the payment would be structured but the Daily Mail claimed that a deal was struck on Sunday and Benteke was free to undergo his medical.

It appears the move is now on the verge of completion as Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol – who’s out in Malaysia covering Liverpool’s pre-season tour – claims that the 24-year-old completed his medical on Tuesday and is expected to arrive at Liverpool’s Melwood training base today to sign the paperwork.

Solhekol suggests that only a slight administrative issue has been holding up the deal but everything has now been resolved and Benteke is expected to formally announced as a Liverpool player later today.

However, the reporter says that the Belgian international is likely to be the last major new arrival at Anfield this summer. He told Sky Sports News:

“Benteke was his No 1 target. He has already signed six players this summer and there is a general feeling at the club that he will be the last.

“There are still stories linking Liverpool with a move for Marco Reus and Real Madrid’s Asier Illarramendi. But I’ve been told those reports are nonsense.

“As far as Liverpool are concerned, I’ve been told they are just working on tying up that Christian Benteke deal and then as far as Brendan Rodgers is concerned he has the players that he needs for next season.”

Brendan Rodgers has been trying to strengthen his strike-force after seeing his side register just 52 league goals last season and I think it’s fair to say the Northern Irishman has achieved his goal once they get this Benteke deal over the line.

Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings have already joined the club and with Benteke set to follow, Liverpool will have three new options in the final third this coming campaign, so even with the loss of Raheem Sterling, I still expect them to be more dangerous going forward next year.

Benteke has scored 49 goals in 101 games for Villa since joining the club from Genk three years ago and he still has plenty of time to develop his game even further at Liverpool, so I think he’s going to prove to be an excellent addition to the squad.

Assuming the deal goes through smoothly, Benteke will become Liverpool’s seventh major signing of the summer and he’ll link-up with new team-mates Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini at training this week while the rest of the squad are on their pre-season tour.
