Manchester United appear to have missed out on the signing of Nicolas Otamendi with AS reporting that Manchester City have agreed a £28m player-plus-cash swap deal with Valencia for the Argentinean international.

Louis van Gaal has been tipped to bring in another central defender this summer and Otamendi is one of the big name players who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks.

The Express reported over the weekend that United had joined Manchester City in putting forward formal offers to Valencia for the 27-year-old but neither bid was understood to have matched the players £35m buy out clause.

However, it appears United have now missed out as AS are claiming today City have agreed a £28m deal for Otamendi’s signature and will unveil him as their latest new signing as early as today [Monday].

The Spanish outlet says that as well as paying £28m for the defender, City have also agreed to send Eliaquim Mangala on loan to the Mestalla as part of the deal, so it looks like their willingness to provide Valencia with a ready-made replacement has swung things in the league leaders favour.

AS say that Otamendi didn’t train with the rest of the squad on Sunday but instead held meetings with Valencia officials where it was decided he would be heading to Manchester City after asking the club to leave this summer.

It remains to be seen how much truth there is behind these reports but Sky Sports News are also claiming that Otamendi is closing in on a switch to Eastlands so it does look like it’s only a matter of time before he’s unveiled as a City player.

The news will no doubt come as another blow to United and van Gaal will now have to look elsewhere if he wants to sign another centre-back before the window closes in two weeks time.

But City will be delighted if they can wrap-up the signing of Otamendi as he’s developed into one of the best central defenders in La Liga following his move from Porto in January 2014.

The Argentinean international is a powerful player so he should have no trouble adjusting to life in the Premier League and I think he’ll prove to be an excellent signing for Manuel Pellegrini.

It seems like the only way United can buy a player is if no other club is aware of them or interested in them, (except for Atsenal). Only an average transfer window so far as we still haven’t filled the most important positions.
