Liverpool have been dealt a major injury blow with Jordan Henderson ruled out for up to two months with a broken foot, according to the BBC.

Henderson has already missed Liverpool’s last four matches with a troublesome heel injury and only returned to training on Friday after travelling to the United States to receive treatment.

The midfielder was pencilled in to make his return against Norwich City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon but the comeback has had to be put on ice for the foreseeable future after Henderson picked up a fresh foot injury.

The BBC claim the 25-year-old broke a small bone in his foot during training on Saturday morning and will undergo an operation on Monday which is likely to keep him out for up to eight weeks.

No official word has come from Liverpool yet but Henderson took to Twitter this afternoon to confirm the injury setback and to tell his fans he’ll work hard to get back on the pitch as quickly as possible.

If the BBC’s estimate is accurate, then Henderson could miss up to 11 matches for Liverpool over the coming two months including key games against Everton, Tottenham and Chelsea.

The news will come as a huge blow to Brendan Rodgers as Henderson has become a key figure for his side and was handed the captains armband following the departure of Steven Gerrard in the summer.

Roy Hodgson will also be bitterly disappointed as Henderson will also miss England’s 2016 European championship qualifiers against Estonia on October 9th and Lithuania on October 12th, while he’ll also be a major doubt for the friendlies against Spain and France in November.

Here is what the midfielder tweeted earlier today:
