Liverpool have finally been given some positive injury news with Danny Ings eyeing a swift return as he prepares to undergo surgery on his knee injury tomorrow, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Ings enjoyed an excellent start to his career at Anfield and was establishing himself as an important first team player before his progress came to an abrupt halt last week.

The striker ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in training ahead of Liverpool’s trip to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham on Saturday and was initially ruled out for up to nine months.

Such a time-frame would have ended his season and meant he was highly unlikely to be fit in time to stake a claim for the England squad ahead of the 2016 European Championships.

However, the Liverpool Echo claim that Liverpool have now been given some positive news with the ligament injury being described as a ‘clean’ tear and the muscles surrounding the left knee have not been affected.

The newspaper says Ings will undergo his surgery in London on Tuesday and while a more accurate recovery time will be known after the operation, the striker has not given up hope of returning to action before the end of the season.

This news will come as a welcome boost to new boss Jurgen Klopp – who’s had to deal with a number of injury concerns during his short stint in the Anfield hot-seat with youngster Joe Gomez also set to undergo surgery this week after suffering his own ACL injury playing for England U21’s last week.

Liverpool were left short of options up front against Spurs on Saturday with Christian Benteke still out with a hamstring injury while Daniel Sturridge was also ruled out with a minor knock, so Ings was a real miss during the 0-0 draw.

However, the 23-year-old is now targeting a swift return and he told reporters on Friday that he hopes to impress new boss Klopp with his professional attitude around Melwood during his rehabilitation.

“The only way I can get in his thoughts and show him what a good professional I am is the way I am in the gym or by being positive around the lads.

“Sometimes negativity can rub off on players and I don’t want to affect their performance. When you are injured you have to keep a positive mindset and keep moving forward.

“There will be a few down days when I am not feeling myself and I am gutted I cannot be out with the team. But I am trying to stay as positive as I can be.” Ings is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo
