Liverpool are facing something of an injury crisis up front ahead of their trip to Chelsea this weekend after Christian Benteke picked up a knee injury on Sunday.

Benteke has only recently returned to action after spending a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury and he marked his return to fitness with a superb header during a 1-1 draw with Southampton at the weekend.

However, the Daily Mail are one of several media outlets who are reporting today that the Belgian international suffered a medial knee ligament injury during the game at Anfield following a clash with Saints midfielder Victor Wanyama.

The injury isn’t thought to be too serious but the 24-year-old has been sent for a scan to determine the full extent of the problem and he’s already been ruled out of tonight’s Capital One Cup clash with Bournemouth.

The Mail say he’ll be assessed over the coming days but Benteke must also now be considered as a major doubt for Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime and his absence leaves Jurgen Klopp with limited options in attack.

Daniel Sturridge is still unable to train due to a niggling knee injury that’s already kept him out of the last four games while Dany Ings is unlikely to play again this season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

Belgian youngster Divock Origi is expected to continue to lead the line up front against Bournemouth in the League Cup tonight but Klopp will be desperate to have one of his more senior strikers available for the trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend.
