A controversial last gasp penalty from Christian Benteke stole all three points as 10-man Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park this afternoon.

Following a goalless opening forty-five minutes, Palace opening the scoring shortly after half-time when Joe Ledley thrashed home a loose ball from the edge of the area in the 48th minute.

Liverpool’s hopes of finding a way back in to the game were dented when James Milner was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 62nd minute handing the hosts a great chance to secure a vital three points.

Liverpool were gifted an equaliser ten minutes later when goalkeeper Alex McCarthy slipped while attempting to make a routine clearance. The keeper presented the ball straight to the feet of Roberto Firmino and the Brazilian international made no mistake as he slotted home for 1-1.

It looked like it was set to end all squad, however, there was late drama as Delaney was adjudged to have fouled Benteke in the area and after checking with his assistant, the referee pointed to the spot. However, replays showed Benteke was extremely fortunate as he went down under very little contact from the defender.

The Belgian international dusted himself off and cooly dispatched the spot kick to secure an unlikely three points for 10-man Liverpool as they climb up to seventh place in the table and to within six points of fourth-placed Man City.
