Manchester United will take on north-west rivals Liverpool at Anfield in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday night. Here is the side I think van Gaal will pick:

Goalkeeper: David de Gea is certain keep his place in goal with Sergio Romero among the substitutes.

Defence: Chris Smalling made a successful return from a shoulder injury during the defeat at West Brom on Sunday so he should continue alongside Daley Blind at the back. Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo have also made successful injury returns in recent weeks so they should remain in the full-back roles.

van Gaal confirmed at his press conference earlier today that Antonio Valencia is likely to be back in the squad after recovering from a broken foot but the Ecuadorian will only be fit enough for a place on the bench. Phil Jones and Luke Shaw remain unavailable.

Midfield: Morgan Schneiderlin is expected to be recalled after being a substitute at the Hawthorns last time out and the Frenchman should start alongside Michael Carrick in the middle of the park to offer plenty of protection in front of the defence. Bastian Schweinsteiger is back training this week but this game comes too soon for the German international.

Attack: Jesse Lingard is suspended for the game tomorrow so Memphis Depay could get a recall and start in attack along with Juan Mata and Anthony Martial. Marcus Rashford should once again start up front as Wayne Rooney remains out with a knee injury and isn’t expected back until April.

Here is how we think United will line-up:

What do you think? What line-up would you like to see start?
