Manchester United are set to table an improved offer for Arsenal target Renato Sanches after seeing their initial £35m offer rejected by Benfica, according to the Telegraph.

Sanches has become one of the hottest young prospects in European football since breaking in to the Benfica first team earlier this season having progressed through the clubs youth system – which he joined as a nine year old in 2006.

The 18-year-old’s potential has alerted a whole host of top level clubs with the Daily Mail reporting earlier this month that Arsenal had joined Manchester United in regularly sending scouts to keep a check on his progress.

However, it looks as though United are ready to press ahead with their interest as the Telegraph claim today that the Red Devils are set to table an improved offer for Sanches after seeing their initial £35m bid rejected back in February.

The newspaper suggests that Benfica have been holding out for a fee worth a staggering €60m (£46.7m) but United are understood to be confident of settling on an agreement at closer to £40m with their latest offer set to go in over the coming weeks.

We’ll have to wait and see whether United are able to get a deal agreed for the teenager or if the likes of Arsenal are going to step-up their own interest to try and hijack the Manchester giants move.

Sanches is a powerful box-to-box midfielder who’s known to have excellent vision and he’s tipped to have a huge future in the game, so he sounds like he’d be a superb addition to either squad if they could lure him to England this summer.

United need to overhaul their midfield with Michael Carrick out-of-contract in June while 31-year-old Bastian Schweinsteiger has endured injury problems in recent years, so Sanches could be the man to fill the void at Old Trafford for years to come.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is also expected to be busy in the transfer market with Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky set to leave at the end of the season and Sanches could be the driving force in the middle of the park that the Gunners have lacked in recent years.
