Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is predicting a tense finish as Manchester United try to pip rivals Manchester City to fourth spot in the table this weekend.

The Premier League 2015/16 campaign draws to a close on Sunday afternoon and with the title and relegation spots already decided, the focus will be on how the rest of the top four will shape up.

Manchester City are in the driving seat as they currently sit fourth, two points ahead of Manchester United with a +18 goal difference advantage, so realistically Manuel Pellegrini’s men need just a point at Swansea to secure a top four finish and Champions League qualification.

United missed the chance to leapfrog their rivals after losing 3-2 at West Ham in midweek so Louis van Gaal’s men need to beat Bournemouth at Old Trafford and hope Swansea can do them a favour at the Liberty Stadium, and Merson believes that United will get the job done with a 2-1 win over the Cherries.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said:

Man Utd v Bournemouth – Sunday, 3pm

United need to win. They were really poor against West Ham but I think they will get the three points. Bournemouth have had a great season but they have not been that good lately and United must win and hope Swansea do them a favour.

So if United get the three points, they’ll then be praying Swansea can get a victory at home to City. Merson feels it’s going to be a nervy time in Wales as the Swans will give the Citizens a tough game, but in the end he’s tipping City to get the point they need. He continued:

Swansea v Manchester City – Sunday, 3pm

I think there will be a twist in the games between United and City. Swansea will give City a game and it will be nervy the whole way. If it’s 1-1 then it will be nervy because a late Swansea goal would knock City out of the top four. There is a lot to play for and everybody wants to win their last home game, that sells season tickets. Swansea have been in quite good form too, beating West Ham and Liverpool recently.

PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1

If Merson’s predictions prove accurate then both City and United will finish on 66 points but Pellegrini’s men will secure qualification to the Champions League thanks to their superior goal difference, leaving the Red Devils having to make do with the Europa League.

Man Utd have put their own pressure on the players, if they fail to get Champions league they will have to take a 20% pay cut next season. This will mean that with Europa league football and the pay cut Utd will only lose £10 million. LVG in the mean time is still living in fantasy land, back in February he was still convinced Utd could win the Premiership, he still believes they can qualify for Champions league but most of all he still believes his job is safe and he will finish the last year of his contract. All I can say is put your money on Lord Lucan to ride Shergar in the Grand National and win, you should get better odds.
