Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed he plans to bring in three new players this summer with Granit Xhaka set to become the first major new arrival at the Emirates, according to the Evening Standard.

We ended a disappointing campaign on a high note yesterday after securing second place in the Premier League table ahead of north London rivals Tottenham thanks in part to a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa.

However, fans are still wanting the boss to make significant improvements to the squad this summer and the Frenchman has now suggested that he plans to bring in three major new signings over the coming months.

It’s not going to be the squad overhaul that some supports feel we need with Wenger preferring to maintain the stability in the squad and add three key players where needed. He’s quoted as saying by the Evening Standard:

“We want to keep the squad stable over the summer while strengthening where possible. You want the group to be stimulated and to believe that we have improved the quality.

“I must say, we want to combine technical stability with players that we know want to play and know our game. Maybe bring in three players for example. That’s the right level for me.”

It’s open to debate whether three new players is enough but we look to be closing in on the first major signing as the Evening Standard are one of several media outlets to report that we’re on the verge of signing Granit Xhaka after submitting a £33.8m offer last week.

The bid is just shy of Borussia Monchengladbach’s asking price but it looks as though the move is close as Xhaka himself has hinted that he’s played his last game for the German club and was seen saying his goodbye’s to his team mates and staff members at the weekend.

With Danny Welbeck ruled out for nine months following knee surgery, a new striker is needed and the Evening Standard claim Wenger is eyeing Juventus’s Alvaro Morata and Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi.

It’s not made clear in the newspaper report what the third position is that Wenger is looking to strengthen but my guess is we’ll look to bring in a versatile defender who’s capable of playing at centre-back and right-back.

It’s certainly been a frustrating campaign as we’ve blow an excellent opportunity to win the title but we do have the basis of a title-winning squad, we just need to make the right signings this summer.

For me, Xhaka would be a great start but we desperately need a top class striker. Olivier Giroud finished the season off with a hat-trick and he is a useful squad player but he showed over the course of the entire season that he’s not good enough to lead a title winning team.

I also think a top class partner for Laurent Koscielny should be a priority as Per Mertesacker and Gabriel have failed to prove they are the answer. Let’s hope Arsene doesn’t hang about and makes his moves early in the summer, and manages to bring in at least three new faces.
