Chelsea Plotting Audacious Raid On Manchester United

The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea are linked with Matteo Darmian…

Incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is plotting a shock raid on Manchester United for Italian international defender Matteo Darmian, according to the Sun.

Conte isn’t due to officially take over at Stamford Bridge until he fulfills his duties with the Italian national team at the European Championships but it looks like he’s already got his new employers working on possible transfer deals.

Several names have been linked with a move to West London in recent weeks but the Sun are reporting today that Conte is eyeing a surprise swoop on Manchester United for one of his compatriots, Matteo Darmian.

The newspaper claims that Conte has identified the 26-year-old as a potential recruit for his new-look Chelsea team and has asked Blues officials to make enquiries over his availability this summer.

It remains to be seen how United would respond to interest from Chelsea but recent reports have indicated that Jose Mourinho is ready to sell Darmian – although he may be reluctant to do business with his former club so soon after being sacked.

Darmian only moved to United from Torino last summer but endured a mixed time during his debut season at Old Trafford as after an encouraging start, he fell out-of-favour under Louis van Gaal during the second half of the campaign.

The former AC Milan defender is predominantly a right-back but he’s also capable of playing as a wing-back or even at left-back, so he’d certainly give Conte plenty of options and his versatility is sure to appeal to the Azzurri boss.

Darmian is currently away at Euro 2016 and starred during Italy’s impressive 2-0 win over Belgium last night, so any potential move will have to wait until after the tournament is over, but it’s going to be interesting to see whether he follows Conte to Chelsea this summer.
