Chelsea See £32m Bid For Key Man Utd Target Rejected

The opening of the summer transfer window is fast approaching so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea have seen a bid for Andre Gomes rejected….

Chelsea have seen an opening £32 million bid for reported Manchester United target Andre Gomes rejected by Valencia, according to Sky Sports News.

Incoming Chelsea boss Antonio Conte isn’t due to officially take charge at Stamford Bridge until he fulfills his duties with Italy at Euro 2016 but it appears the 46-year-old already has his new employers working hard on potential transfer deals.

That’s because Sky Sports News claim that Chelsea have seen a £32m offer for Andre Gomes knocked back by Valencia with the Spanish outfit understood to be demanding around £42m due to a sell-on clause inserted into his contract.

Gomes only made a permanent move to Valencia last summer following a successful loan spell from Benfica and it appears the Portuguese club were smart enough to put a 25 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that would see them take a quarter of any proceeds from his sale.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will decide to increase their offer to nearer Valencia’s asking price but the Blues could yet face stiff competition for Gomes’s signature as the Daily Star reported last week that Manchester United are also showing a keen interest in the midfielder.

Jose Mourinho shares the same agent as Gomes and the newspaper suggests that the United boss is hoping to use his relationship with super-agent Jorge Mendes to secure a deal for the Portuguese international this summer.

Mourinho is expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer and a central midfielder should be on the agenda as Michael Carrick is approaching the end of his career while Bastian Schweinsteiger endured an injury-plagued debut season in England.

Only time will tell whether United or Chelsea will be prepared to pay over £40m for Gomes but he’d be an excellent signing for either club if one of them could agree a deal this summer.

The 22-year-old shone for Valencia during a difficult campaign last season that saw them finish 12th in La Liga while he was excellent during Portugal’s opening 1-1 draw with Iceland at Euro 2016 on Tuesday night, so I could see him being a huge success here in the Premier League.
