Liverpool have confirmed that Joel Matip will wear the No.32 shirt next season after the defender officially completed his free transfer move to Anfield today.

The Reds announced way back in February that they’d agreed a deal to sign Matip when his contract expires with German outfit Schalke at the end of June.

After being released from his contract, the 24-year-old was able to be officially registered as a Liverpool player today and the Reds announced on Liverpoolfc.com earlier this morning that Matip had completed his switch to Anfield on a long-term deal.

The Cameroonian international centre-back will take part in his first training session with his new team mates at Melwood on Saturday when many of Jurgen Klopp’s squad return for pre-season ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

Liverpool have now revealed on Twitter that Matip will wear the No.32 shirt next season – the same number he wore at Schalke – after youngster Cameron Brannagan agreed to switch to the No.25 shirt. You can see a video of the unveilling below.

Matip is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder but he’s spent most of his career as a central defender so he’s expected to be a direct replacement for Martin Skrtel, who’s set to join Turkish side Fenerbache after falling out-of-favour under Klopp last season.
