The opening of the summer transfer window is now open so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd and Liverpool are linked with Ruben Neves…

Manchester United and Liverpool are ready to go head-to-head over the signing of FC Porto’s £13m-rated midfielder Ruben Neves this summer, according to the Express.

Neves has been with Porto his entire career and progressed through the youth ranks before breaking in to the first team set-up in 2014 where he’s become an important part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s starting eleven having made 38 appearances last season.

After representing his country at every youth level from U16 to U23, the defensive midfielder has recently broken in to the senior Portugal squad with two caps so far and while he just missed out on a place in their Euro 2016 squad, he’s certainly seen as a star for the future.

The 19-year-old’s potential has attracted interest from a whole host of top European clubs but the Express claim that Neves could be heading to the Premier League with Man Utd and Liverpool battling-it-out over his signature.

New United boss Jose Mourinho has already been busy in the transfer market reshaping his squad with Henrikh Mkhitaryan set to following Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in moving to Old Trafford.

However, the former Chelsea coach also needs to strengthen his midfield as Michael Carrick is approaching the end of his career while Bastian Schweinsteiger endured an injury-plagued season last year, so Neves would be the ideal long-term replacement for either player.

Jurgen Klopp has also been active in the market bringing in four new players but the Liverpool boss is also on the look out for a deep lying midfielder with Joe Allen’s future in doubt and Neves looks to be on the German coaches radar.

It’s going to be an interesting battle between these two English heavy-weights and while the Express claim Porto will demand around £13m for the teenagers signature, that shouldn’t be an issue for either United or Liverpool given the financial position of both clubs.
