New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is plotting an audacious raid on former club Chelsea for midfielder Cesc Fabregas this summer, according to the Mirror.

Mourinho has already splashed out on defender Eric Bailly, attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in recent weeks as he looks to overhaul the squad left behind by former boss Louis van Gaal this summer.

However, the Portuguese coach is expected to further strengthen his midfield options and it looks like the so-called ‘Special One’ is hoping to be reunited with Fabregas at Old Trafford after making him one of his prime targets.

The Mirror claim that Mourinho is interested in signing Fabregas just two years after taking him to Chelsea in a £27m deal from Barcelona and is prepared to wait to see what Antonio Conte’s plans are for the midfielder before launching his swoop.

Conte officially begins works at Chelsea today but the Italian tactician has already been the laying ground-work behind the scenes on his summer transfer plans with the newspaper suggesting that central midfield is one area he’s set to revamp.

The Mirror say Conte is looking to add more steel and energy in the middle of the park with N’Golo Kante a key target along with Roma’s Radja Nainggolan, Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Mario and Valencia’s Andre Gomes.

Should the former Juventus coach be successful in signing two of these targets then it could see Fabregas become surplus to requirements and it appears Mourinho is waiting to offer the Spanish international a fresh start in the north-west.

Fabregas enjoyed an excellent first season back in England with Chelsea having helped them march towards the Premier League title but the 29-year-old endured a far more difficult campaign last season as the Blues limped to a mid-table finish.

United could certainly do with another central midfielder as Michael Carrick is coming towards the end of his career and won’t be able to play week-in, week-out, while Bastian Schweinsteiger has struggled with injuries, so Mourinho will be hoping to get Fabregas back to his best if he’s able to lure him to Old Trafford.

However, we’ll have to wait and see whether the Spaniard will be in Conte’s first team plans but it would be a surprise if Chelsea agreed to do business with a direct rival like United should the Italian coach agree to let him leave this summer.
