Cesc Fabregas was sent-off for a horror tackle on Ragnar Klavan as Chelsea beat Liverpool 1-0 in a feisty International Champions Cup clash in California last night.

The Blues opened the scoring after just ten minutes at the Pasadena Rose Bowl as Gary Cahill rose above Marko Grujic to head home a Fabregas corner past new Liverpool signing Loris Karius.

The Merseysiders dominated possession but struggled to create any clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities with a Philippe Coutinho free-kick the only effort to seriously test Blues keeper Asmir Begovic.

A physical clash between the two Premier League sides boiled over in the 70th minute when Fabregas was dismissed for a late lunge on Klaven as the Spaniard caught the defender with a dangerous studs-up challenge.

Liverpool couldn’t make their man advantage count and a feisty game ended with Chelsea victorious but a flurry of yellow cards saw Cahill booked along with Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno, Ovie Ejaria, Marko Grujic, Dejan Lovren and Kevin Stewart.
