Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed some welcome positive injury news with Jack Wilshere set to return to training ahead of next weeks clash with Liverpool.

Wilshere has seen his pre-season plans disrupted after picking up a minor knee injury while Arsenal were away on their pre-season tour of the United States last week.

The 24-year-old missed the Gunners friendly victory over Mexican outfit Chivas last Sunday and was subsequently ruled out of their trip to Scandinavia as the club took further assessment of the injury.

Given Wilshere’s poor history with injury problems, there were understandably fears that the issue might be worse than first thought and the midfielder could be facing an extended spell on the sidelines.

However, Wenger has now reassured fans that the England international’s injury isn’t serious after confirming that Wilshere is already back running and will resume full training with the rest of the squad when they return from Sweden on Monday.

Speaking after the Gunners 8-0 win over Viking on Friday night, the Arsenal boss told the Daily Mail:

‘Wilshere has started to run today so it’s very short-term. He will train with us next week,’

As long as he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, Wilshere will now get a full weeks training under his belt and should be in the squad for the north Londoners Premier League opener against Liverpool next Sunday.

The news will come as a welcome boost to Arsenal as Wenger has also confirmed that Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny and Mesut Ozil will miss the Liverpool clash after returning late to pre-season training following their exploits at Euro 2016.

With Per Mertesacker and Danny Welbeck certainly out, and Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez lacking match fitness, the last thing Wenger needed was Wilshere being ruled out next weekend so it will be a welcome relief that he’s already on the mend.
