Arsenal Eyeing Surprise Swoop On Man Utd For £25m-Rated Star

Arsenal are eyeing a shock swoop on Manchester United for a £25m-rated star as Arsene Wenger continues to search for a new centre-back this summer.

The transfer window is now drawing to a close so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are linked with Phil Jones…

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering a shock swoop on rivals Manchester United for out-of-favour centre-back Phil Jones but a deal seems increasingly unlikely, according to the Telegraph.

Wenger is desperately trying to land another central defender before the window closes next week after seeing Gabriel join Per Mertesacker on the sidelines with an ankle injury that’s going to keep him out for another six weeks.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with Shkodran Mustafi but are struggling to agree a fee with Valencia for the German international so Wenger has been scouring the market for alternative targets.

The latest name to be linked with a move to the Emirates is Phil Jones with the Telegraph claiming that Wenger is considering launching a shock swoop on United for the 24-year-old England international.

Jones joined United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011 with many – including Sir Alex Ferguson – tipping him to develop in to one of the best centre-backs in England but he’s found it difficult to establish himself in recent years.

A number of injury problems saw the defender make just 13 appearances under Louis van Gaal last season and despite regaining full fitness, Jones has been unable to force his way in to Jose Mourinho’s plans this campaign.

He last played for United way back on January 2nd and it’s fair to say that his career is stalling so Jones could be open to the idea of moving to Arsenal if the north Londoners do decide to make a formal move over the coming days.

The Telegraph suggest that United would value Jones at around £25m if they decided to sell, however, the newspaper believes that the Red Devils have told the defender that he wont be leaving Old Trafford this summer and Mourinho will refuse to do business with his old foe Wenger.

Jones still has four years remaining on his contract so United are under no pressure to sell even if the player pushes for a move, meaning Arsenal will have to continue their search for a new centre-back as we head in to the final week of the window.
