Chelsea are hoping to bring in two new defenders and another midfielder as Antonio Conte gets ready to splash the cash before the end of the month, according to the Telegraph.

Conte has brought in just two new signings since arriving as manager in July with midfielder N’Golo Kante joining from Leicester and striker Michy Batshuayi arriving from Marseille.

The Italian tactician admitted last week that he desperately needs to strengthen his defensive options as with Kurt Zouma still nursing a serious knee injury, he currently has just four senior defenders to choose from.

The Telegraph claim that Chelsea have now stepped up their efforts to land a centre-back and a full-back before the transfer window closes next week and are trying to strike a deal with AC Milan for Alessio Romagnoli after failing to persuade Napoli to sell Kalidou Koulibaly.

Romagnoli is one of the most highly-rated defenders in Italian football and the left-footed central defender is exactly the type of player Conte is looking for as it would give him the option to play three at the back.

However, Milan are proving difficult to deal with as Sky Sports News claim that they’ve just rejected Chelsea’s improved £34m offer for the 21-year-old so Conte may be forced to turn his attention to Torino’s £25 million-rated defender Nikola Maksimovic.

Another full-back is also on the agenda and the Telegraph claim that Wolfsburg’s £17m-rated left back Ricardo Rodriguez and Juventus’s Stephan Lichtsteiner are both under consideration.

Rodriguez has developed as one of the most exciting full-backs in German football while Conte obviously knows Lichtsteiner well from their time together in Turin, so it will be interesting to see which player Chelsea go for.

The Telegraph suggest that the west Londoners are also considering bringing in another central midfielder before the window shuts after shelving their hopes of signing another striker having failed to land Romelu Lukaku.

The newspaper says Chelsea could renew their interest in Radja Nainggolan after Roma failed to qualify for the Champions League while Brazilian midfielder Thiago Maia is another player on Conte’s radar.
