Liverpool have been dealt a fresh injury concern ahead of their huge Premier League clash with Manchester United after Georginio Wijnaldum picked up a knock playing for Holland on Monday night.

Wijnaldum collapsed to the floor clutching the back of his leg after making a run shortly after the hour mark during Holland’s 1-0 defeat to France in their World Cup qualifier in Amsterdam.

The Liverpool midfielder received treatment on the pitch by the Dutch physio but was unable to continue and eventually limped off to be replaced by Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost as the hosts chased an equaliser.

Wijnaldum will now head back to Merseyside to undergo further tests on his hamstring so Jurgen Klopp will be sweating over the results as he faces losing the midfielder for several weeks if a strain or pull is confirmed.

We’ll have to wait for the results to come in but the 25-year-old Dutch international must now be considered as a major doubt for Monday night’s huge showdown against Manchester United.

The news will be a big blow to Liverpool as Wijnaldum has been ever present for the Reds in the league this season and has enjoyed an excellent start to his career at Anfield following his summer move from Newcastle United.

If Wijnaldum is ruled out then Emre Can is expected to be recalled to make his first league start of the season after recovering from an ankle injury but Klopp is still waiting to see if Adam Lallana is passed fit after he withdrew from England duty with a groin injury.

To make matters worse for Liverpool, Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren are also doubts after picking up injuries during the 2-1 win at Swansea before the international break so they could be without four key players for the visit of United.
