Goodison Park

Liverpool will be looking to reclaim second spot in the table when they take on Everton at Goodison Park this evening.

After disappointing results against Bournemouth and West Ham, the Reds got back to winning ways in emphatic style with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Middlesbrough last week.

However, Manchester City’s win over Arsenal on Sunday has seen Liverpool drop to third and they are now nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea after they beat Crystal Palace at the weekend so it’s vital Jurgen Klopp’s men come away with all three points tonight.

The Red half of Merseyside certainly has the recent bragging rights as Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 11 derbies with Everton’s last win coming back in October 2010 – although 7 of those 11 games have ended in draws.

Ronald Koeman’s side should also be in buoyant mood after coming from behind to beat Arsenal last week so they’ll no doubt be desperate to give Klopp a tough night in his first Merseyside derby.

Team news

Liverpool will make a late call on Joel Matip after the centre-back missed the win at Middlesbrough with an ankle injury but he should be fit to return alongside Dejan Lovren at the back.

Emre Can will also be handed a late fitness test after missing the last two games with a knee injury while Daniel Sturridge could be back on the bench after returning to training following a calf problem.

Simon Mignolet is expected to keep his place in goal after Loris Karius was taken out of the spot-light following some questionable displays lately.

Everton will have to make do without Phil Jagielka after he was sent off late on against Arsenal but Gareth Barry could be back in contention after sitting out last weeks clash.

However, winger Yannick Bolasie has been ruled out for several months after undergoing knee surgery.

Likely Line-Ups

Predicted Score

Everton 1-2 Liverpool: The Toffees showed what they are capable of when they put the effort in after coming from behind to beat Arsenal but Liverpool usually have the measure of their city rivals. Klopp’s side are so dangerous going forward I just don’t see Everton being able to cope. No doubt it will be a well contested game but I fancy Liverpool to take home the three points.
