The Man Utd players have taken to Twitter to congratulate Wayne Rooney after he scored a superb free-kick to become the clubs all-time record goal-scorer.

Several of the Manchester United players have taken to Twitter to congratulate Wayne Rooney after the striker scored a superb free-kick to become the clubs all-time record goal-scorer.

Rooney drew level with Bobby Charlton on 249 goals after netting during the FA Cup win over Reading two weeks ago and after drawing a blank in recent games with Hull and Liverpool, the 31-year-old broke the record in style this afternoon.

United found themselves 1-0 down going in to the final minutes against Stoke City today after Juan Mata put through his own net midway through the first half at the Bet365 Stadium.

However, Rooney came off the bench to score a stunning free-kick in stoppage time to not only salvage a point but also see him become United’s all-time record goal-scorer on 250 goals.

It’s a remarkable achievement and while Rooney is no longer considered a vital part of the United first team, he’s still got plenty of time left in his career to put some distance between him and Charlton and make it a record that will be extremely difficult to beat.

Many of the United players have now taken to Twitter to congratulate Rooney with David De Gea, Marcus Rashford, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini among those to post messages.

Rooney has also said it’s an honour for him to break the record while former United stars such as Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville, Bryan Robson and Andrew Cole have also send their congrats to the striker.
