Tottenham Eyeing Audacious Swoop On Man Utd For £36m Attacker
The January transfer window is now closed but we can still look at deals that failed to get across the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Tottenham are linked with Anthony Martial….
Tottenham are eyeing an audacious swoop on Manchester United this summer with Mauricio Pochettino tracking £36m attacker Anthony Martial, according to the Mirror.
The French international made his name during a two-year spell at Monaco where he established himself as one of Europe’s hottest young talents before earning a £36m move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2015.
Martial enjoyed an excellent debut season at United under former boss Louis van Gaal having provided 19 goals and 14 assists but he’s struggled to make the same impact this season under Jose Mourinho.
The 21-year-old has started just 10 Premier League games and failed to make an appearance in United’s previous three matches before returning to the starting eleven for Saturday’s win over Watford.
Martial produced a fine display, scoring one and creating the other during the 2-0 win, but doubts remain over his long-term future as he’s approaching the final two years of his contract.
Mourinho clearly has reservations about the attacker and recently publicly questioned his performances and desire to hold down a first team place at Old Trafford, so understandably Martial’s future is in doubt.
It looks like Tottenham have been alerted to the Frenchman’s situation as the Mirror claim that the North Londoners are keeping a close eye on developments ahead of a potential summer swoop.
The newspaper says that Mauricio Pochettino wants to bring in a pacey forward at the end of the season and Spurs are ready to renew their interest in Martial after previously holding talks with Monaco before his move to United.
It would certainly be an audacious move from Tottenham if they did make a formal attempt to sign Martial but it’s going to be interesting to see what happens with the attacker over the coming months.
If he continues to be in and out the side at Old Trafford then I wouldn’t be surprised if Martial gives serious thoughts about leaving this summer, especially if United bring in another top class attacker such as Antoine Griezmann.
