Liverpool & Man Utd Step-Up Interest In £52m International
The January transfer window is now closed but we can still look at deals that failed to get across the line and those being lined-up for the summer. Today, Liverpool and Man Utd step-up their interest in Danilo….
Liverpool and Manchester United have stepped-up their interest in Danilo Pereira after sending scouts to watch the £52m-rated Porto midfielder in action, according to a report in the Mirror.
Danilo has established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in Portuguese football since joining Porto from Maritimo in 2015 and he’s also a regular in the Portuguese national team with 17 caps to his name so far.
The 25-year-old was named in his countries squad for Euro 2016 last summer and made five appearances en route to the final where Portugal shocked France to clinch the trophy.
The powerful midfielder’s performances have attracted interest from the Premier League with the Mirror citing a report from A Bola that claims Liverpool and Manchester United are both tracking the player.
And it looks as though the English giants have now stepped up their interest as the Portuguese outlet reports that they both had representatives in the stands to watch Danilo in action during Porto’s 7-0 thrashing of Nacional last weekend.
Danilo only recently signed a new contract that ties him to Porto until 2022 so they are under no pressure to sell and the Mirror claim his new deal includes a buyout clause worth a whopping £52m (€60m).
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool or United would be willing to pay that kind of money for the midfielder but I think he’d be an excellent signing for either club if they managed to get a deal agreed.
Liverpool have doubts over the long-term future of Emre Can and Jurgen Klopp needs competition for Jordan Henderson in the holding role so Danilo would be the ideal protection for the Merseysiders vulnerable defence.
United are gearing up for another busy summer in the transfer market and a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick is desperately needed and I feel Danilo has the potential to form an excellent partnership alongside Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba at Old Trafford.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks and I’m sure Klopp and Mourinho have other targets to consider but I’d like to see Danilo come to the Premier League this summer.
