Tottenham Hotspur are leading Arsenal in the race to sign Ross Barkley with Everton expected to cash-in on the midfielder this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Barkley joined Everton as a kid and progressed through the youth ranks to emerge as one of England’s brightest prospects since breaking in to the first team set-back in 2012.

The 23-year-old is now a first team regular under Ronald Koeman and has played an important role in the Toffees recent good form which has seen them move in to Champions League qualification contention.

Barkley has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park for some time but the midfielder may finally leave his boyhood club this summer as he’s approaching the final year of his contract and is yet to agree terms over an extension.

Koeman confirmed last week that if Barkley doesn’t sign a new deal soon, then the club will have no option but to cash-in this summer rather than risk seeing him walk away in 2018 as they’d only be due minimal development compensation.

This news has alerted several clubs with the Mirror reporting over the weekend that Arsenal had joined the race for Barkley’s signature as Arsene Wenger looks to overhaul his squad this summer.

Aaron Ramsey has endured another inconsistent campaign while Mesut Ozil is being tipped to leave the Emirates after failing to agree a new deal, so Barkley would be a useful signing for the Gunners as he’s capable of playing in central midfield or in the No.10 role.

However, it looks like Arsenal have some catching up to do as the Daily Mail claim that Tottenham are currently in pole position to secure a deal for Barkley this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino tottenham

Spurs have long been linked with a move for the midfielder and the newspaper says that Mauricio Pochettino has now hardened his interest after being impressed by how Barkley has developed under the iron fist of Koeman in recent months.

Pochettino is building an impressive young squad at White Hart Lane and Barkley would fit the profile of player the Argentinean coach is targetting as he’s young and has scope to develop even further under his tutelage.

We’ll have to see how things develop over the coming months but the Mirror suggest that Everton may be forced to sell for as little as £10m, which would represent an absolute bargain for a player of Barkley’s quality.
