Manchester United are on the verge of completing a stunning deal worth around £86m to sign Atleitco Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Jose Mourinho is gearing up for another busy summer of transfer activity and a new striker looks to be on the agenda with Wayne Rooney tipped to leave Old Trafford after falling out-of-favour.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s future is also in doubt as his contract is up in June and he’s yet to sign an extension so Mourinho needs a top class forward and Griezmann has been strongly linked with a move in recent months.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that United are ready to trigger the 25-year-old’s £86m buyout clause after Mourinho made the French international his top summer transfer target.

Griezmann has publicly distanced himself from a move away from the Vicente Calderon, however, it seems things may be different in private as the Manchester Evening News claim that sources close to the striker believe a move to United is on the verge of completion.

While Atletico are desperate to keep hold of Griezmann and have him lead Diego Simeone’s side out at their new stadium next season, they know there is very little they can do to prevent him leaving if his buyout clause is met.

The MEN say that United have also short-listed Romelu Lukaku as another striking option for the summer but Griezmann is the man Mourinho wants and those close to the player say a deal is now a formality.

Griezmann made his name at Real Sociedad but has developed in to one of the best strikers in the world since joining Atletico in 2014 having scored 79 and provided a further 24 assists in his 147 appearances so far.

The striker was named as the Player of the Tournament at Euro 2016 after helping France reach the final and he was recently voted as the third best player in the world behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

It’s safe to say Griezmann would be a sensational signing for United if these reports are true and it would be great to have another world class talent plying his trade here in the Premier League.
