Arsenal and Manchester United will now face stiff competition from a number of European clubs over the signature of Monaco’s £33m-rated midfielder Fabinho this summer, according to the Daily Star.

Fabinho made his name as a full-back after joining Monaco in 2013 and his impressive form led to him signing a new two-year contract extension last summer which tied him to the club until 2021.

The Brazilian international has reinvented himself in a defensive midfield role this season and has played a key role in helping Leonardo Jardim’s side reach the semi-finals of the Champions League and stay on course to winning the Ligue 1 title.

The 23-year-old’s form has attracted interest from England with the players father revealing they have held talks with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United while Barcelona have also supposedly expressed an interest.

Joao Roberto Tavares is quoted by Sky Sports last month:

“We have talked to Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, we have even been approached by Barcelona, but it didn’t go any further.

“We like Manchester United and the work of [Jose] Mourinho, but we have a little soft spot for City.”

Arsenal have had problems in central midfield this season with Santi Cazorla missing the majority of the campaign through injury while Aaron Ramsey and Francis Coquelin have struggled for consistent form so Arsene Wenger could be eyeing Fabinho as a partner for Granit Xhaka next season.

Jose Mourinho is also expected to be in the market for a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick and Fabinho would form an exciting midfield trio alongside Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba at Old Trafford if he opted to join United.

However, it looks like the duo will face stiff competition as not only are Barcelona in the running but the Daily Star claim that Napoli and Inter Milan have also joined the chase for the South American’s signature.

Monaco will no doubt be desperate to keep hold of the midfielder but the newspaper report suggests they may decide to cash-in if £33m is put on the table – which shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the likes of Arsenal or United.
