Manchester United are set to beat Liverpool to the signing of Michael Keane with the centre-back expected to make a £25m move back to Old Trafford this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Keane started his career at United having joined the club at 11-years-old and progressed through the youth ranks but was sent out on a series of loans after struggling to force his way in to the first team set-up.

The centre-back eventually made a permanent £2m move to Burnley in 2015 and has developed in to one of the best young defenders in English football over the past two seasons with his potential acknowledged on the international stage after Keane made his England debut against Germany back in March.

The 24-year-old has attracted interest from the upper echelons of the Premier League with the Mirror reporting earlier this month that Liverpool were confident of beating Man Utd to Keane’s signature after agreeing personal terms with the player.

Jurgen Klopp knows he needs to strengthen his defence as his side have conceded too many goals to be considered genuine title challengers and Keane was supposedly ear-marked as a top target by the Merseysiders.

However, it looks like United have hijacked Liverpool’s proposed deal as the Daily Mail are reporting today that Keane is now expected to make a ‘dream’ return to Old Trafford.

The newspaper says that United are now the clear favourites to sign the centre-back in a cut-price £25m deal with the Red Devils able to negotiate a lower fee due to the inclusion of a 25% sell-on clause inserted in to his contract when he was sold in 2015.

The Daily Mail claims that Keane is desperate to return to his boyhood club and is set to sign a contract worth around £100,000-a-week as long as he’s given assurances he’ll play at least 30 games per season.

Jose Mourinho is gearing-up for a busy summer as he looks to build a squad capable of competing for major honours next season and Keane could be viewed as the long-term partner for Eric Bailly at Old Trafford.

However, United are going to have to make room for Keane’s arrival and Chris Smalling is probably the man most likely to leave as the newspaper says he’s become disillusioned with life at the club under Mourinho.
