Arsene Wenger is eyeing an audacious £40m swoop for Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial if the Arsenal boss misses out on Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, according to the Daily Mail.

Wenger is expected to be extremely busy this summer as he looks to rebuild his squad after finishing outside the top four last season and attacking reinforcements are on the agenda.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with a sensational swoop for Mbappe but with Real Madrid strong favourites to land the Monaco striker, it looks like Wenger is eyeing alternatives.

The Daily Mail claim the French coach has placed Martial on his hit-list with Wenger understood to be willing to pay £40m to sign the United attacker if his pursuit of Mbappe ends in failure.

Obviously such a deal will be extremely difficult to pull off due to Wenger’s frosty relationship with Mourinho but the newspaper says Arsenal hope to conduct negotiations at boardroom level.

Nevertheless, Mourinho would still do all he could to try and block any sale of Martial to Wenger but the Daily Mail claim Arsenal chiefs hope United’s owners would be tempted to cash-in on a player that fell out-of-favour last season.

Martial arrived at Old Trafford from Monaco in 2015 heralded as one of the most exciting young talents in European football and he enjoyed an excellent debut campaign having scored 17 goals in his 49 appearances.

However, the 21-year-old struggled to hold down a regular spot last season as he made just 18 Premier League starts with the attacker reportedly enduring a difficult relationship with Mourinho.

Martial’s future has been cast in doubt amid reports United are lining-up a move for Ivan Perisic as the Croatian international’s arrival would see the former Monaco man fall even further down the pecking order.

This will give Arsenal encouragement they could pull off what would be a sensational swoop and United bosses know they need to balance the books as Mourinho gears-up for another busy summer of activity.

However, Martial is still highly thought of among the Old Trafford faithful and they would no doubt be hugely disappointed if he were to join Arsenal so any deal is still highly unlikely to happen this summer.
