Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are eyeing a move for Julian Weigl….

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl after failing to land Tottenham’s Eric Dier or Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, according to the Daily Mail.

Jose Mourinho is expected to be extremely active in the transfer market this summer and a new holding midfielder to act as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick is among his priorities.

United have been strongly linked with a number of players in recent weeks but the Daily Mail claim that Tottenham’s Eric Dier and Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic are Mourinho’s two first choice targets.

Dier has been used as a centre-back on several occasions since joining Spurs but his preferred position is in the middle of the park and it seemed Mourinho was willing to offer the England international the chance to establish himself in his favoured role.

However, Tottenham are understandably determined to hang on to Dier and with the 23-year-old tied to a long-term contract United have virtually no chance of luring him away from north London.

A potential deal to sign Matic looked to be a real possibility a few weeks ago when it was widely reported that Chelsea were on the verge of signing Monaco star Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The Express carried a report at the end of June that suggested United were close to sealing a £40m deal to sign Matic and the transfer would be wrapped-up once Bakayoko finalised his proposed switch to Stamford Bridge.

However, Bakayoko’s move to west London has failed to progress as Chelsea had hoped meaning there has been no further movement on United’s attempts to land Matic.

Therefore, the Daily Mail claim that Mourinho is now ready to switch his attention to Julian Weigl and is eyeing a move for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder.

The 21-year-old joined Dortmund in 2015 after coming through the youth ranks at 1860 Munich and he’s developed in to one of the most exciting young midfielders in German football.

Weigl was virtually ever-present for Dortmund last season before breaking his ankle during the closing stages of the campaign and the German international isn’t expected to be fully-fit until mid-September.

This could complicate any potential move to Old Trafford this summer so United may be forced to wait until the January window to formalise their interest in Weigl if they still fail to land one of their prime targets.
