Arsenal & Liverpool In Battle To Sign German International Midfielder

Arsenal and Liverpool are among the clubs battling to sign Leon Goretzka this summer as the midfielder looks set for a move away from Schalke

Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Leon Goretzka is a player in demand…

Arsenal and Liverpool are among the clubs battling to sign Leon Goretzka as the midfielder looks set for a move away from Schalke this summer, according to a report in the Express.

Goretzka moved to Schalke from boyhood club Bochum in the summer of 2013 and he’s developed in to one of the best central midfielders in German football over the past few years.

The 22-year-old enjoyed an excellent individual season last year, despite Schalke enduring a disappointing campaign, and he’s now a regular in the German squad having previously represented his country at youth level.

The box-to-box midfielder is being tipped to leave the Veltins-Arena this summer as he has just one year left on his contract and he’s turned down a lucrative offer to extend his stay with Schalke.

A move to the Premier League could be on the cards as the Express are citing a report from Sport Bild that claims Arsenal and Liverpool are both showing a keen interest in signing Goretzka.

Arsene Wenger has already snapped-up striker Alexandre Lacazette and left-back Sead Kolasinac but the Gunners boss has confirmed he wants to further strengthen his squad after missing out on the top four last season.

A new central midfielder appears to be on the agenda as Santi Cazorla has been ruled out for the foreseeable future due to chronic Achilles issues and the Express say Wenger wants to sign Goretzka this summer.

However, Liverpool are also seemingly in the running for his signature with Jurgen Klopp looking to add to his midfield options as the Reds boss tries to build a squad capable of competing in the league and Champions League.

Goretzka would be an excellent addition for either club and he should be available at a reasonable price due to his contract situation, however, the report says Arsenal and Liverpool will face further competition from the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

It will be tough to beat the European heavy-weights to the midfielders signature, particularly Bayern as the Bundesliga champions always seem to get their hands on the best young German talent eventually.
