Arsenal have opened talks over a potential deal to sign midfielder Willian Carvalho with Sporting Lisbon ready to do business at just £27m this summer, according to a report in The Sun.

Carvalho has been with Sporting since joining the clubs youth system in 2005 and has developed in to one of the best midfielder’s in Portuguese football since breaking in to the first team set up in 2013.

The 25-year-old has established himself as a vital part of Jorge Jesus’s starting eleven and is also a regular in the Portuguese national team squad with 29 caps to his name so far having previously represented his country at every youth level.

Carvalho has been linked with a move to the Premier League for several years but so far a move has failed to materialise, however, speculation is intensifying once again that he could be on his way to England.

The Sun are citing a report from Record that claims Arsenal have opened talks with Sporting over a potential deal and Carvalho is understood to be keen on the idea of moving to the Emirates.

The Portuguese outlet suggests that while the midfielder has a release clause set at £40m, Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho is willing to do a deal for £27m – which seems like a very reasonable fee in today’s market.

It’s further reported in the newspaper that Arsenal are preparing a formal offer for Carvalho but it’s not clear how much it will be worth while we could yet face competition from the likes of Newcastle and West Brom.

However, Carvalho is understood to favour a move to north London as he grew-up watching Arsenal and wears the no.14 shirt in honour of his boyhood idol and Gunners legend Thierry Henry.

Carvalho is predominantly a deep lying midfielder but he’s also capable of playing at centre-back if needed so he’d be a very useful addition considering they are two areas of the squad I feel need strengthening.

We’ll have to wait and see how things progress but I’m not getting my hopes up on any deal actually happening as we see these Carvalho reports every transfer window and nothing ever comes of them.
