Tottenham got their Premier League campaign off to a winning start as they beat 10-man Newcastle 2-0 at St James’ Park this afternoon.

After a goalless first forty-five minutes, the hosts were reduced to 10-men in the 48th minute when Jonjo Shelvey stood on Dele Alli’s ankle right in front of the referee giving him no option but to show the red card.

Tottenham took full advantage of the extra man and it was Alli who opened the scoring in the 61st minute as he volleyed home at the far post following an excellent move involving Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen.

The north Londoners doubled their advantage less than ten minutes later when Ben Davies swept home to make it 2-0 following another superb team move by the visitors.

There was no way back for Newcastle so Tottenham eased to a 2-0 victory to get off to a winning start to the 2017/18 campaign.
