Liverpool have lined-up Tottenham target Max Meyer as an alternative to Lorenzo Insigne as Jurgen Klopp looks for potential replacements for Philippe Coutinho, according to the Mirror.

The Brazilian playmaker stunned Anfield after handing in a transfer request on Friday in order to try and push through a big-money move to Barcelona this summer.

Liverpool insists Coutinho won’t be sold at any price but it seems Klopp is drawing-up contingency plans in-case the clubs owners, FSG, decide to cash-in on the unsettled star.

The Mirror claim Klopp has identified Insigne as his number one target to replace Coutinho should he secure a move to the Nou Camp after watching the 26-year-old score 20 goals for Napoli last season.

The newspaper suggests that the Italian international would be valued at around £60m but doing business with Napoli isn’t going to be easy so Klopp has lined-up Meyer as an alternative.

The 21-year-old has developed in to one of the hottest properties in German football since emerging through the Schalke youth set-up but his future at the club is in serious doubt as he’s got one year left on his contract and is refusing to sign an extension.

Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for the attacker with the Mirror suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino has been on Meyer’s trail for several months.

The Spurs boss is yet to make a single signing this summer but he’s vowed to be active during the closing stages of the window and Meyer appears to be on the Argentinean coaches radar.

However, it seems Tottenham could now face stiff competition from Liverpool and the Mirror claim that Meyer is open to the idea of working under Klopp at Anfield if a deal can be agreed between the two clubs.

The German international is predominantly played as a central attacking midfielder but he’s also capable of playing on either flank so he’d give Klopp, or Pochettino, plenty of options if either were able to snap him up this summer.
