Chelsea and Tottenham are still hoping to sign Ross Barkley in a cut-price deal this month despite the Everton midfielder being ruled out for three months, according to the Telegraph.

Barkley’s future at Goodison Park has been the subject of much debate this summer as he’s expected to find a new club after refusing to sign a new contract extension.

The 23-year-old has been with the Toffees his entire career after coming through the clubs youth system but he’s in the final year of his contract and Ronald Koeman has indicated they are ready to cash-in if their valuation is met.

The Merseysiders were initially thought to be holding out for around £50m but the Telegraph reported last week that Chelsea and Tottenham were hoping to secure a bargain £25m deal during the closing stages of the window.

Those plans appeared to be scuppered as many thought the duo pull out of the race to sign Barkley after he was ruled out for up to three months having suffered a serious hamstring injury in training earlier this week.

However, the Telegraph are reporting today that Chelsea and Tottenham remain keen on signing Barkley and are pressing ahead with their attempts to get a deal agreed before the end of the month.

The newspaper says the London duo believe Barkley could prove to be a bargain signing in this market given his quality and potential and while it’s a blow he’s facing three months out, they still see him as a superb long-term addition.

Antonio Conte is desperate to further strengthen his squad and Barkley would give the Blues boss another option in midfield while he’s also capable of playing further forward in attack if required.

Mauricio Pochettino is expected to be extremely active over the next two weeks having failed to sign a single player so far this summer and Barkley would give the Spurs boss vital depth ahead of their return to the Champions League.

We’ll have to wait and see how things progress but I think the England international would be a superb signing for either Chelsea or Spurs if they could snap him up for anywhere near £25m this summer.
