Alexis Sanchez is set to stay at Arsenal after we ran out of time to secure a proposed £90m deal for Thomas Lemar as his replacement, according to a report in the Express.

The Sanchez-to-City deal developed throughout the day with reports claiming we had agreed a deal in principal to sell the Chilean international after they tabled an offer of £55m up front with £5m in add ons.

The deal hinged on Arsenal being able to sign a replacement and Lemar emerged as the prime candidate with widespread reports suggesting we had launched a record £90m bid for the youngster.

We were facing a race against time to get the deal done as Lemar is due to start for France in their World Cup qualifier against Holland in Paris this evening.

However, it seems it’s all been left too late as the Express are citing a report from the Guardian that claims Arsenal have had to pull the plug on the Lemar deal as there isn’t enough time to get the deal over the line.

Journalist David Hynter is quoted by the Express as saying:

Manchester City came in earlier today with a second offer for the Chile striker – of £55m, plus £5m in add-ons – but it has come down to Arsenal being able to sign a new attacking player.

“Quite simply, they look to have run out of time on that front. They wanted Monaco’s Thomas Lemar and the French club demanded that they pay 100m euros for him. Which Arsenal indicated they were willing to do.

“But there appears to be insufficient time for Arsenal to now agree a package with Lemar, particularly as he is in the France squad for this evening’s game against Holland – which kicks off in about three hours.

“Were Arsenal able to get Lemar, they would have been inclined to take the £60m from City for Sanchez. But it is unlikely to happen now.”

Our failure to land Lemar means the Sanchez-to-City deal is now OFF so the Chilean international is set to stay at the Emirates and run down the final year of his contract.

Obviously things could still change over the coming hours but there is very little time left for Arsenal to buy a top class attacker to replace Sanchez so it looks like he’ll still be our player come tomorrow.
