Jose Mourinho has played down reports in the media suggesting that Paul Pogba has been ruled out for up to 12 weeks with a hamstring injury.

Pogba captained United for the first time during their Champions League group stages clash with Basel last week but his game came to a premature end as he went down clutching the back of his leg early in the first half.

The French international was spotted leaving Old Trafford on crutches following the 3-0 victory on Tuesday night and was assessed by club doctors the following day where a hamstring injury was confirmed.

Initial reports suggested Pogba would miss around four weeks but further speculation in the press this morning claimed that the midfielder could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks.

However, Mourinho has now dismissed these reports as ‘nonsense’ as he insists they won’t know the full extent of the injury until Pogba undergoes a further scan next week once the swelling goes down.

Speaking after United’s 4-0 victory over Everton today, Mourinho told ManUtd.com:

“I don’t know if it is 12 weeks or 12 days, honestly. Any comment or any new rumour is totally wrong because we don’t know if it is 12 weeks or 12 days. The player was diagnosed initially after the match because of the conditions of the muscle and the bleeding. The decision was one more week to wait to see really clearly in the scans, that I mentioned, of the injury.

“Nobody in this club spoke about 12 days or 12 weeks. Not at all. In the hamstring, it’s a normal procedure and we wait a few more days. So it’s completely nonsense information.”

We’ll have to wait and see what the scans show this week but obviously it would be a devastating blow if United were to lose Pogba for any significant period of time.

The Frenchman had started the new campaign in excellent form before he suffered this latest injury so United will be praying for positive news over the coming days as they wouldn’t want his injury to derail a promising start to the season.

However, the Red Devils coped well in Pogba’s absence today as goals from Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial secured an impressive 4-0 win over Everton.
