Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major injury boost as Jan Vertonghen has declared himself fit for this weekend’s clash with Arsenal, according to the Mirror.

Vertonghen linked-up with his country at the start of the international break but sat out Belgium’s 3-3 friendly draw with Mexico last week after suffering a heel injury in training during the build-up to the game.

The Spurs defender has been carrying an ankle problem in recent weeks so Tottenham fans were left fearing the 30-year-old could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

Red Devils boss Roberto Martinez played down the injury and Vertonghen was recalled to the starting eleven for Belgium’s 1-0 victory over Japan on Tuesday night.

The centre-back appeares to have come through that game unscathed as Vertonghen has declared himself fit and available for selection ahead of Saturday’s trip to the Emirates.

He’s quoted as saying by the Mirror:

“Yeah, nothing to worry about. I’ve been struggling for two weeks with it and that’s why I didn’t play against West Ham in the Carabao Cup but all good.

“I feel very good today, I am ready for the weekend.”

The news will come as a welcome relief to Mauricio Pochettino as Vertonghen is a key part of his starting eleven and with Toby Alderweireld struggling with a hamstring injury, the last thing Spurs needed was losing another defender.

Pochettino is expected to provide a full team news update at his press conference today with the Spurs boss offering the latest on the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Harry Winks and Hugo Lloris after they were all ruled out of international duty.
