Chelsea progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League as Group C runners-up after being held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico Madrid this evening.

Alvaro Morata saw a effort midway through the first half easily saved while Davide Zappacosta went closer as he forced Jan Oblak in to a fine save in the 34th minute.

Former Chelsea full-back Filipe Luiz hit the post early in the second half and Atletico eventually broke the deadlock minutes later as Saul Niguez headed home at the far post from a Fernando Torres flick.

Andreas Christensen somehow managed to miss an open goal but Chelsea finally levelled things up in the 67th minute as Eden Hazard’s low drive was deflected in to the net via Stefan Savic.

Neither side could find a winner so the draw combined with Roma’s win over Qarabag means Chelsea finish second in Group C while Madrid fail to qualify for the last 16.
