Manchester United are plotting a stunning swoop for Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic this summer after Jose Mourinho made him a key target, according to a report in the Mirror.

Rakitic made his name during a three-year spell at Sevilla where he helped the club lift the Europa League before earning a dream move to Barca in the summer of 2014.

The Croatian international has continued to forge a reputation as one of the best midfielders in Europe during his time at the Nou Camp as he’s helped the Catalans win a whole host of honours including 2 La Liga titles and the Champions League.

The 29-year-old has been a key part of Ernesto Valverde’s starting eleven this season having racked-up 41 appearances in all competitions already to help Barca reach the quarter finals of the Champions League and stay on course to winning La Liga.

However, with Antoine Griezmann expected to join Barca this summer the Mirror suggest this will lead to Philippe Coutinho moving to a deeper role which will see Rakitic pushed out the side.

The former Schalke midfielder could therefore be on the market at the end of the season and the newspaper claims that Man Utd are ready to offer Rakitic a fresh start in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho is expected to be in the market for at least one new midfielder this summer with Michael Carrick set to retire and the future’s of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera in doubt.

Rakitic would be an excellent signing if United could pull it off and the Mirror says a switch to Old Trafford is likely if the midfielder looks to leave Barca this summer.
