Man Utd In Battle To Sign £50m Bundesliga Star As Mourinho Plots Summer Spree

Manchester United are ready to battle it out with Manchester City over the signing of £50m-rated Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng this summer

The transfer window is closed but managers are working hard on their plans for the summer so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are linked with Jerome Boateng…

Manchester United are ready to battle it out with Manchester City over the signing of £50m-rated Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng this summer, according to the Sun.

Jose Mourinho is expected to spend heavily at the end of the season as he looks to build a squad capable of competing for major honours and a new centre-back is on the agenda.

Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones are fighting for their futures and it seems Mourinho is drawing-up a list of potential replacements as he bids to strengthen his defence this summer.

The Sun claim Mourinho has now set his sights on Boateng but United will face stiff competition from City as Pep Guardiola is also desperate to lure the German international to England.

Boateng spent an unsuccessful year at City before joining Bayern in 2011 and he’s developed in to one of the most consistent central defenders in Europe in recent years.

The 29-year-old has helped Bayern win a whole host of trophies including 5 Bundesligs titles and the Champions League while he’s also won the World Cup with Germany.

However, the Sun claims Boateng could be on the move at the end of the season after being hampered by injury problems for the past two years and it seems a switch to Manchester could be on the cards.

The newspaper says Bayern rate the defender at £50m – which shouldn’t be a problem for clubs with the financial resources of United or City – so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Mourinho will no doubt be desperate to sign a world class defender such as Boateng but Guardiola knows the player well from his time at Bayern so the City boss may feel he has the edge over his rival.
