The transfer window may be closed but managers are working hard on their plans for the summer so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd close-in on Fred…

Manchester United are closing-in on a deal to sign Fred after Manchester City ended their interest in the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Fred has produced some excellent form since joining Shakhtar from Internacional almost five years ago and he’s hoping to be named in the Brazilian squad for this summers World Cup finals in Russia.

The 25-year-old was reportedly close to joining Man City in January but the MEN claim Pep Guardiola opted to sign central defender Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao instead.

The newspaper says Fred flew to England on deadline day during the winter window in the hope that United would make a late swoop but the Red Devils didn’t open talks with his representatives until after the window closed.

City have since turned their attention to Napoli star Jorginho which has paved the way for United to move in to pole position and the MEN claim Jose Mourinho is pushing to get a transfer wrapped-up ahead of the summer.

Mourinho is expected to sign at least one, if not two, central midfielders as Michael Carrick is set to retire while Marouane Fellaini is tipped to walk away on a free transfer when his contract expires in June.

The United boss confirmed his transfer plans last weekend after telling the MEN:

“We are going to invest the basic to improve our squad. We need to find a replacement for Michael Carrick, if Marouane Fellaini leaves, we need to find a replacement for Marouane Fellaini.”

Shakhtar are expected to cash-in on Fred this summer and TeamTalk reported last week that a deal is likely to cost United in the region of £50m – which shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for a club with their resources.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks as there is still time for another club to hijack United’s proposed move but I think Fred would be an excellent signing if Mourinho could get it over the line.
