Man Utd Eyeing Swoop For French Star After Seeing £55m Bid Rejected

The summer transfer window is open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are linked with Clement Lenglet…

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Clement Lenglet after being frustrated in their attempts to sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Jose Mourinho knows he needs to strengthen his squad this summer if United are to compete with Manchester City for the title next season and he’s already snapped-up Diogo Dalot from Porto and Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, a new centre-back is also a priority and United have been heavily linked with Alderweireld as the Belgian international looks to find a way out of White Hart Lane this summer.

The 29-year-old’s future at Spurs is in serious doubt as he’s failed to agree terms over a new deal and he lost his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s first team last season to Davinson Sanchez.

The Sun claim United have already seen a £55m bid knocked back by Tottenham as Daniel Levy is holding out for a fee closer to the £75m Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January.

However, United are reluctant to go that high for a player approaching 30 years old and the M.E.N claim Mourinho has now identified Lenglet as a cheaper alternative for Alderweireld.

The French U21 international has become one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Europe since joining Sevilla in 2017 and he was excellent during their Champions League win over United last season.

The newspaper says Lenglet has a £31m release clause in his contract so he’ll be significantly cheaper than Alderweireld and he’s also seven years his junior so a deal for the Frenchman makes a lot of sense.

The 22-year-old has huge potential so I think he’d be an excellent long-term signing for United if they decided to take him to Old Trafford this summer, but I’m sure Mourinho hasn’t given up hope of landing Alderweireld just yet.

Sounds like Woodward is going to force Mourinho to operate with a weak defensive line again. Good thing DeGea is there. Alderweireld could solve the problem and Mourinho knows it but I guess that Woodwards fear of Levy has won the day.

Maybe Lenglet is not as good as Alderweireld but he is significantly younger and is not as injury prone. Instead of paying an exorbitant price for Alderweireld, perhaps the best long term strategy might be to purchase Lenglet now and pick up Alderweireld for significantly less next summer. I think Bailly, Smalling and Lindelhof are decent CBs and, in spite of all the criticism of United’s defense, they had one of the best defensive records in the league this past season. Adding Lenglet to it along with Dalot can only help improve further in this area.

Everybody knows he is not in Tobys league, – he is in the spanish league and Toby is in the premier league. But Lenglet definitely is an alternative!

To let spurs screw us for loads of money for one of their squad players is ridiculous. I would never have paid more than 50 mill for anybody his age.
