Fred made an impressive full debut as Manchester United got back to winning ways by beating Real Madrid 2-1 in the International Champions Cup on Tuesday night.

United have endured a disappointing pre-season so far and lost 4-1 to rivals Liverpool at the weekend but they bounced back with an excellent victory over the reigning European champions at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Alexis Sanchez was arguably United’s best player and the Chilean international opened the scoring in the 18th minute as he swept home with a low finish from a Matteo Darmian cross.

Ander Herrera made it 2-0 less than 10 minutes later as the Spanish midfielder lashed home a left-footed effort from a Sanchez knock down to put United in control midway through the first half.

Madrid pulled one back on the stroke of half time through Karim Benzema but United saw out the second half to secure a morale-boosting win over the La Liga giants.

Fred made his first start for Man Utd since joining the club in a £52m move from Shakhtar Donetsk earlier in the summer and the Brazilian midfielder impressed in the middle of the park.

The 25-year-old was excellent in possession and caught the eye with his all-round performance in midfield before being replaced by Axel Tuanzebe in the 68th minute.

Based on this evidence, the South American star looks to be a real talent and he has the potential to form an excellent partnership alongside Paul Pogba this coming season.

United fans will be keen to see more of Fred during their final pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich on Sunday before their Premier League opening with Leicester City on August 10th.

Here are video highlights of Fred’s performance and all the goals from Man Utd’s 2-1 win over Madrid:
